Mark T. Smith is one of New York City’s most prolific artists. He has created over
500 paintings and thousands of drawings, and his influence is now being felt well
outside of New York. Before he turned 30, he had already provided illustrations
for the likes of the Walt Disney Company and Harper Collins, been commissioned
by Absolut Vodka for an “Absolut Smith” national ad campaign, won over a dozen
awards from such prestigious organizations as the Society of Illustrators and Print
Magazine, and had seven major solo art exhibits in New York, Los Angeles and
Washington, D.C.
His style defies simple categorization, which has both delighted and confounded
critics from the very beginning of his career. Mark’s subject matter is as diverse
as his pallet: past themes for painting series have included heroes, religious
iconography, hot rods, Christianity, cowboy culture, esoteric religions, animals
and urban violence.
Mark graduated from Pratt Institute in 1990 with a BFA. His corporate patrons
include Walt Disney Company, IBM, MTV, Showtime Networks, Nickelodeon,
Harper Collins and a dozen other major companies. His work has also joined the
collections of many private collectors. A recent commission was painting two
life-sized cows for the Cow Parade 2000, which were installed all around New
York City in the summer of 2000.
Mr. Smith describes himself as “The single greatest thing to happen to the
American cultural scene since box wine.”
